Whitaker, Rivest Take Recent Tournament Wins

The Smithville Bassmasters recently held back-to-back tournaments on Mozingo Lake
and Smithville Lake on June 3rd and 4th.

The first outing was held on Mozingo Lake near Maryville, Missouri. Dennis Whitaker
took home the win with a five fish limit of black bass weighing 14.36 pounds.

“When I came up for practice on Wednesday, I knew it’d be tough” Whitaker said. “I told
myself I’d be happy just to boat a keeper, and I was surprised that by the end of the day I
had a limit!” (photo attached Dennis Whitaker – photo credit Clay Palmer)

Jin Nguyen brought four fish to the scales for a second place weight of 11.51 pounds.
Nguyen’s bag also had the tournaments big bass, a lunker, at 6.43 pounds.
Mike Dugger rounded out the top three with four fish that weighed 10.60 pounds.

The club paid out $800 for five places and two places for big bass to the twenty-five-man
field. Forty-six fish were brought to the scales for a combined weight of 115.42 pounds.
The following Sunday, the club returned to their home lake. Twenty-six anglers tested
    their skills at Smithville Lake.

This time, Travis Rivest took the honors of first place. His five fish limit tipped the
scales with an impressive 19.22 pounds. A healthy 6.16 pound Missouri bass anchored
his bag and was the tournaments big bass.

“They were killing my topwater bait,” exclaimed Rivest. “I had my limit by 8:30am and
caught seven more keepers that allowed me to upgrade my catch. It was a great day!”

Mike Harris took second with a five fish limit of 15.49 pounds and Denny Sheafer came
in third with a limit weighing 14.19 pounds.

The fish were biting for many of the anglers with eight anglers boating five-fish limits.
All in all, $832 was paid to the top six finishers and two big bass places. Seventy-nine
fish were brought to the scales for a grand total of 203.18 pounds.

The Smithville Bassmasters’ next tournament will be held at Truman Lake, July 9th. The
club’s next monthly meeting will be Tuesday, July 11th, 6:30pm at the Smithville Pizza
Hut. New and current members are welcome to attend.
